Wasp Happy With His Career Direction

DANCEHALL deejay, Wasp, is happy with the path his career is currently taking. With his management structure falling into place and a growing repertoire of conscious tunes, the artiste is confident of success.
"When you do a conscious song in the dancehall it is so different from doing a regular song. The life span is longer and it has a wider appeal," the artiste declared.

Wasp used the example of his single Unfair Officer, which was a hit for him in 2009 and which is still getting its fair share of props almost one year later. He also mentioned that singer I-Octane, the fast-rising standard bearer of culture, owes his growing success to conscious lyrics, "not the three-day-old dancehall hype."
"And the thing is that the elders like it and the kids are also singing it," he said of his no-holds-barred hit Unfair Officer, adding that the impact was the same with his previous single, Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youths.

"A lady who is almost 90 told me that she liked the song," he said, still sounding amazed.
Now that those songs have been tested and proven, the deejay is focused on the Daseca-produced single Nutten Nah Gwaan. Wasp goes straight to the heart of the matter with this song, a combination with Raine Seville. This single touches a nerve and he hopes it will edge him closer to his ultimate goal — staking his claim on a portion of the dancehall pie.

"I wrote it on the way going to Old Harbour one day when I saw the people selling on the street and realised that nutten really nah gwaan. Raine and I met up at Carib and chatted a bit and she said she like the song Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youths and suggested that we do a song together. The next day she called and I was only too happy to go in the studio, so I did a demo and took it to Daseca and the rest is history," he laughed.
It was his first time working with the Daseca crew and Wasp has nothing but praises for their professionalism.

"Daseca dem professional and can bring my ideas to life. Working with Daseca you can't be off key because they are musicians — all three of them play the keyboard. It's a good learning experience, if you as the artiste is willing to learn," he declared.
The video, which was directed by Danielle Dyer, had its premiere a few weeks ago.

Chino Releases New Album (Never Change (From Mawning)

For much of his 18-track sophomore album, 'Never Change (From Mawning)', Chino McGregor defines himself as a new talent who steers far from negativity, has an undying love for the ladies, his family and music and, at day's end, will always remain true to whatever he believes in.

Named after his 2009 smash hit, the album was released in Japan in the latter part of the summer and features positive meditative songs, songs for the ladies, as well as a Japanese version of the title track. The difference with Chino is obviously his positive message and his focus on life lessons' as well as the ladies - thus separating him from the rest of dancehall's new crop of talent. Positive tracks include the opening track Who God Bless, Never Change (From Mawning), Bad Mind among others.

Never one to leave out the ladies, Chino charismatically charms the ladies in songs such as Ruff it up, Bring it Come, Me and You (a duet featuring reggae singer Alaine) and Phone Gyalist. He doesn't just sing about satisfying women and fulfilling her needs. In Please Forgive Me, he speaks about a relationship that has gone sour and explains he loves being a bachelor too much and says sorry before they part ways.

On the final track, the Japanese version of the title track, he surprises with his grasp of the Japanese language and delivery (I should know, I studied the language for a year). In terms of production, Never Change explores a wide range of beats - from up tempo beats to mid tempo and the old-school feel, yet modern synthetics. His brother Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor, (featured on three of the album's five collaborations) should be commended for sticking to his dancehall beats yet, gives them an international flair.

Overall, the album is a good listen. It showcases the vocal and lyrical diversity of one of dancehall's newest and brightest stars.

Lutan Fyah Thinks Of New Album

Fresh off a successful 10-show European tour where he "tore it up proper", Lutan Fyah is revealing he is mulling over producing yet another album.

The singer, who was born in Thompson Pen, St Catherine, and who describes himself as a 'singaholic', who is always in the studio, believes time is drawing nigh for a new body of work.

"I am thinking about putting an album together but we want to create a new vibe, so we a meds how we can come up with it," he said.

Thoughts of a new album have been inspired in part because of the way his music has impacted on the younger generation in Europe.

"When we go to the (music) festivals, we see 16-year-olds, 10-year-olds, the majority are the youth. The youth love the music," he said.

"When they organise dub-plate sessions, a some little boys you go see who own the sound systems, so I give thanks to know that the children gravitate to Lutan Fyah music."

Lutan Fyah recorded his first songs on Buju Banton's Gargamel Records and his first two albums were released by Lustre Kings and Minor 7 Flat 5. Early 2008, San Francisco's 2B1 Records released Africa, a double disc, 30-song album by the prolific singer.

The album included songs like St Jago De La Vega, Save the Juvenile and Outa Line, which are largely familiar to the sound-system audience around the world. It was released three years after Phantom War, a compilation of songs distributed by Britain's Greensleeves Records.

The former footballer-turned-singer is down to perform in California, Dominica and Suriname in the coming weeks and just recently performed in Canada.

Cezar Releases Mid Tempo Ballad She Said

Singer/songwriter/producer Cezar impresses on his latest recording She Said. The sugar coated mid-tempo ballad which was shipped to US and Caribbean radio for airplay consideration a week ago, reveals a mature and sincere side to Cezar's artistry.
There are four different mixes to the track. The reggae vibes mix was produced by Andrew 'Preggs' Thompson and Elton Brown for State of the Art Music. The club mix was produced by Conroy Forte and Ryan Chin for Washroom Entertainment, while the acoustic mix was expertly handled by Rohan Dwyer.

A house version was produced by DJ Josh from Bulgaria.
In a release to the media Cezar explained the story behind She Said. "She Said really came out of the track itself. I received the track from a friend and producer and after listening to it for a short while, the idea for a melody popped into my head using a repetitive 'she said' line. After that I drew on conversations I had with friends or overheard about the things that women say and feel about relationships," the singer shared.

Cezar added "I decided to make the song be a story of a conversation I was having with a woman who had been hurt from a relationship that she was involved. The rest just fell into place. Sometimes songs write themselves and this one did that in many ways," Cezar pointed out.
The talented Cezar has worked with a list of who's who from the reggae music fraternity including producers Tony Kelly, Steven 'Lenky' Marsden, Louis 'Flabba' Malcolm, David Kennedy, and Mario 'Mario C' Campbell.

He has also written songs for the likes of Tami Chynn, Wayne Marshall, Maya Azucena and soca artiste Machel Montano among others. His impressive writing ability gained him second place in World Music in the 2006/07 International Songwriting Competition for the masterfully penned Keep On. Out of 15,000 songs from around the world, Cezar's sole entry came out on top.
The remix earned Cezar the honour of being the first Jamaican ever to have his song endorsed and licensed by Coca-Cola, who used it as part of its Beijing Olympics campaign; complete with a limited edition Coke bottle bearing Cezar's name.

She Said will be featured on Cezar's forthcoming album Musaic.
Cezar is currently being managed by Rodney Hill of RHH Music Corp.

Big Things In Store, Says I-Octane

Deejay I-Octane is looking forward to even better and greater things for his career in the music business.

The young lyrically conscious artiste has been on a recent high after years of trying to break into music.

When THE STAR caught up with I-Octane yesterday the artiste was busy in studio working on more singles to be released soon.

Born Byiome Muir and hailing from Clarendon, I-Octane is poised to take his career to another level with hits under his belt such as Stab A Vampire, Lose A Friend, My Life, Mama, among others. The artiste wowed on last month's Reggae Sumfest show, where he performed as one of the faces of Digicel's Next Generation artiste - along with deejay Assassin.

Octane commented, "it feels great to know all the work I've put in has paid off. The works that I've accomplished have been recognised and nuff more great things are in store. I plan to reach much farther than this, I know my music is gonna get there."

The artiste parted ways with Arrows Studio earlier this year - Arrows has been managing him almost since the start of his career. Since the split, however, I-Octane says he has been managing quite well.

"It's been fantastic, I'm not currently being managed by anyone but get the support from knowledgeable people in the business," he said. According to the singer persons can look out for his record label, which he plans to start soon.

In the meantime, persons can look out for new singles including Everytime You Touch Me for DASECA Records. He is also planning to shoot a video shortly for his song No More.

Lady Saw Drops First Single From New Album

Great party vibes, walk out and never get tired attitude, girls' anthem approach and respect to independent women are all saucily packaged in Party Till December, the frolicking, lead-off single from Lady Saw's soon-to-be-released album, My Way, on her new label, Divas Records/Toasting Music/ Universal.

My Way is due in stores September 7. Armed with a rollicking, uptempo rhythm, Lady Saw steps to it as only she can and fires off lyrics which are sure to have all the single ladies - and some of those 'in a relationship' - making that quantum leap from boredom to the dazzle of a dance floor. And as infectious as the rhythm is, Party Till December is one of those songs that make the listener also want to hear the lyrics.

Lady's Saw's delivery, which oozes with confidence, coupled with her ability to ride a rhythm and her experience as a smooth toaster, give this single its appeal.

According to Saw, who wears her producer's hat on this track, Party Till December was one of the first songs she did for the album and while working on the project it was her favourite - until it was replaced by others.

"I thought the record company would have chosen one of the combination singles, perhaps the one with Eve or Ding Dong, because those are really nice tracks. So I was surprised when they selected Party Till December as the lead-off single," she explained, adding that she is pleased nonetheless.

Saw surmised that the single's crossover potential could have played a role in the decision-making process. Party Till December is quite a club banger and is also a true girls' anthem, the type which has been gaining popularity with fans internationally.

On the track she dishes out with loads of attitude - this body's too hot to be at home just kicking back - after which she informs that she's got her own money, her own ride and her bills are paid. So what does an independent single girl with a man who wants her back supposed to do? Well, Saw gives an option - with a new attitude and a killa hairstyle, let's party till December.

My Way also has productions from Tony 'CD' Kelly, Lloyd 'John John' James, Danny Browne and Stephen McGregor. Among the other tracks are Every Way Mi Go, Your Chick, He Is At My House (featuring Eve), My Way, Me Hold Yuh, Muscle Control (featuring Camar) and I Can't Wait (featuring Ding Dong).

Anthony Cruz Cruises Through Canada

It could easily have been called making up for lost time as singer Anthony Cruz cruised through Canada on his first professional visit to that North American country.
"It was as if the people were holding their breaths and waiting for me," an excited Cruz said, his eyes flashing with glee. "They knew my songs like Half-Way-Tree, but they had never seen me perform live, and it was a big thrill for me to be so appreciated. It was just a joy," he said of his performances at the Jamaica Day Festivals in Toronto and Ottawa and Jambana in Toronto.

According to the reggae singer, who is the nephew of the late Garnett Silk, the positive energy from his Canadian trip was in no way lessened by the fact that the Jamaica Day Festival in Toronto had to be rescheduled. "I did a lot of radio interviews, signed autographs at the venue and really enjoyed the whole pre-show vibe before it was cancelled due to rain," he explained.

And what he didn't get to give his Jamaica Day fans, he unleashed at the Jambana Festival in Downsview Park . Also on the bill were Fab 5, Frankie Paul and Canada-based reggae singer, Steele.
His next gig was at Club Northern Tropics where he played with mostly Canadian artistes like Visionary, Mystics, Princess Anla and Nikki.

In Ottawa, which was another first, Cruz was one of the headliners for the Jamaica Day festival there. He was full of praise for the promoters of the event at the Club Rozz Entertainment Complex , and also for the fans who showed their support. "That show had me, Tinga, Frankie Paul, Visionary and we all gave the people their money's worth," he recalled.

He then turned his attention to the French Canadian city of Montreal which was hosting the successful annual, Montreal Reggae Festival. For Cruz, the question that he was repeatedly asked was, "Why has it taken you so long to get here?"
His answer, "Nothing happens before the right time."
According to Cruz, who's now busy promoting his latest single Downtown, the people in Canada showed him so much love that he can't wait to return.

Denyque's Summer Love Hits Itunes

Every girl's summer anthem is now available in popular music marketplace, iTunes. Denyque's Summer Love was released on iTunes a few weeks ago, but the singer decided to hold back on announcing it pending the release of the video for the song.
While the song is continuing to boom locally, the artiste's manager Jade Lee says that it is starting to make waves in other markets.

"What we noticed when Summer Love was just released is that there was a definite interest in this song and more so in Denyque's sound. She has an interesting mix of dancehall, pop and a little R&B happening for her and it is fresh," Lee commented.

She continued that the time was right to make the official announcement that the track is available on iTunes, especially since Denyque continues to receive approval from internet users, music lovers, entertainers, producers, critics and fans.
While the Cash Flow-produced Summer Love seem set to heat up iTunes, Denyque is already preparing to release more singles before the summer is out. She has been hard at work with producers like Jeremy Harding, Neil Mitchell and Conroy Forte.

At 20 years old, this singer/songwriter has reached a level of musical maturity that is far beyond her years with a distinctive and innate talent that promises to be one of Jamaica's finest. Denyque is determined to take her place in music history.
Since Summer Love premiered on local television two weeks ago, Jamaicans have been logging on to social networking site Facebook and video-hosting website YouTube to see the video, which Denyque is very pleased about.

"Everyone is giving me such good feedback on the video, and I know that doing a video can be a tricky thing, so to get great reviews on my first attempt makes me really happy and excited." She says that plans to take the video to the North American and Caribbean markets will give the song that added element to make it a success on iTunes.
